Slow down.

Writer's picture: Preethi Preethi

This is an unusual time for all of us. Many of us are on pause, while others are sick, and many are even dying.

This year more than ever, we have seen the world beginning to crumble because of tensions, hostility, rivalry, and most importantly, because of improper care towards our environment and people.

Meanwhile, everything had been rising: technology, discoveries, monumental records. So much ambition was in the midst of reaching its peak, and it seems like that is what happened: we have reached a climax with our ambition, that things have been spiraling downhill. What happens when you work too hard, too fast, without a little time to just take a step back? You reach the top of the bell curve that will then accelerate downhill. Fortunately, one of the good things that have been coming out of this quarantine is a lot of self-reflection and reflection of our society in general. Many of us have been SLACKING and have not been taking care of our foundations. By foundations I mean things such as: self-care, mental health, and HYGIENE. Living in the city has allowed me to see this more vividly. Many people don’t clean up after themselves, lack manners, and are just lost in their own world. If a car honks at them, they immediately glare and blame the driver. When in reality, they were so caught up with the music in their headphones that they didn’t notice the traffic light was green;

it wasn’t even their turn to walk. We are so quick to deny our responsibilities and take accountability.

Maybe all this chaos is a wake-up call to be more careful with ourselves and to others. Treat others more compassionately and stop living this life like you’re the only one in it! Another beautiful thing that I have seen emerge from this quarantine, is the coming together of families, friends, and people of similar interests via social media. All of us are low key going crazy but we are all in it together. I have seen so much more positivity, awareness, and messages that encourage all of us to take this time not to be so ambitious, but to take life one step at a time. Pay attention to the small things. Do the little things that you used to love but stopped doing because of the stress of a rushed and busy life Spend more (virtual) time with a friend whom you lost a strong bond with due to conflicting schedules. Be there for your family; Be there for your parents! Most importantly be there for you and take care of your mental health, your physical health, and the way you act towards others. Hopefully when all this is over, we can come out of it more compassionate, understanding, grateful, and careful to ourselves and those around us.
