Set Up a New Reminder

Writer's picture: Preethi Preethi

I was cleaning out my closet a few days ago when I found a stack of journals from my elementary school years. I laughed to myself knowing how embarrassed I was going to be while reading them. I took a deep breath and opened the first book.

I had entries talking about my first elementary school crushes and what a dork I was, along with entries of me being worried about so many things. I wrote about my first encounters realizing I was different than others, physically and culturally, as well as feeling like I just didn’t fit in.

Reading those entries eleven years later made me shed some tears. Even as a kid, life was difficult but I managed to get through it.

I also had entries of my accomplishments ranging from school awards to fitness accomplishments such as losing 10 pounds or running a mile a minute faster. Those small goals and records are why I am who I am today. I wrote about these things because they mattered to me. These worries, goals, and aspirations I had when I was in elementary school, all continued to move with me in my life, and I still work on them.

I needed that flashback to the past that allowed

me to tap into how I felt as a young kid for a moment and what was going on in my head.

I needed that reminder.

I used to write in my diary as a form of therapy. But now I intentionally write and create vlogs with the intention that my future self, and hopefully future children can learn from my decisions, feelings, and actions in the present moment. These journals serve as a reminder of a time when I may have felt and thought differently than I do at that present.

If you’re not a writer or a vlogger, perhaps you get these reminders through photo albums, birthday cards, or old yearbooks.

Just as quickly as you are to set a reminder on your phone to wake up, schedule a meeting, or meet someone for lunch, make a note to try to remind yourself of how far you’ve come to get to who you are today.

We’re so quick to have a list of future reminders and tasks that keeps us focused on what’s next. Sometimes we need to pause and look back at what happened. How did you get here?

What and who did it take for you to build the person you are today?

I hope this stirred something in your heart or mind.

Stay happy and blessed <3
