Are you too comfortable?

Writer's picture: Preethi Preethi

The definition of comfortable is "A state of physical or mental content, undisturbed and at ease"

How many of us love being comfortable? I know I do.

Comfort brings peace, stability, and a source of safety for many of us.

But what happens when all we want is comfort?

All the places we go to are the ones we know the ins and outs of.

All we surround ourselves with are people who are similar/familiar to us.

All the things we strive for are within our levels of understanding.

We're just coasting through a predictable life.

You see, too much comfort will prevent our character from being sharpened.

And when we don’t sharpen our character, we become complacent and dull.

I recently just got my certification as a personal trainer.

I was initially very reluctant to go through the course because I was sure it would just be a repeat of things I already knew since I had been living a fitness lifestyle for over 10 years.

Despite that reluctance, I was aware that in terms of securing a job, I would need professional certification. So I did it - I took the course, and I actually learned a lot of technicality and anatomy that I didn’t previously know and frankly didn’t have the desire to know.

But after I took the course, I saw how vital it was to understand the mechanics of the body as well as the physiological side because that all impacts how we workout and why we should workout one way versus another.

Yet the biggest part of stepping outside my comfort zone was the idea of getting myself a personal trainer.

Weird right? I just got my personal trainer certification but wanted to get trained by another trainer.

The reason for this was that I knew I had experience, but I also was just one person.

My experience is all the things that happened to me which doesn't mean that the way I work out, eat, and live my life is going to work well for another future client I may have.

I had to humble myself and be accepting of the idea of learning about exercise from someone else that was more experienced and knowledgeable than I was.

I had to get outside of my own comfortable idea that my experience was enough to help others grow in their fitness journeys.

My experience is a big part of how I coach others, but it’s not all of it. And the trainer who I have now has already been teaching me so many transformational concepts which I am so grateful to have been able to learn and start implementing and teaching to my future clients.

I'm proud to say I'm pushing myself to learn from others in the educative fitness realm so that I can challenge some of the beliefs I've held onto for too long.

So what comfortable thing, place, or idea are you holding onto?

I dare you to step outside of it.

Go visit a new place. One that doesn’t remind you of home, that doesn’t have people or memories attached to it.

Make a new friend that is strikingly different from you, yet one you could learn from and be challenged by.

Humble yourself, and find a trusted mentor. One that can guide you and reveal limits about yourself that you may be unaware of.

These are all safe and empowering ways to grow outside your comfort zone.

Think of comfort as a type of medicine.

Having it in a safe and occasional amount, is powerful and rewarding.

But having it every day will make it ineffective and potentially dangerous.

Stay blessed and be joyful.
