How to stay focused

Writer's picture: Preethi Preethi

My morning routine looks something like this:

Wake up at 5:00 am

Stretch, drink some water, and head out the door for my run with the sunrise.

Then I come back, stretch some more,

Get showered, drink some hot water/ coffee, pray, and then get on work mode.

Then I actually wake up and it’s actually like 9 am.

Did I get you there for a second?

No joke that used to be my routine in freshman year of college

I was crazy productive in between my athletic life, classes, and even my social life was up there.

These days because classes are online and later in the day,

my schedule is very flexible and up in the air for the most part.

And let me tell you, for a control freak like me, it is very frustrating.

I loved having a busy schedule, where the first thing I did in the morning is workout because the rest of the day I was jam-packed doing work and or being social.

With this kind of routine, weekends were truly the best because I got to relax and savor the two days all the meanwhile rest and recharge for the busy weekdays which I also looked forward to.

So I guess I’m also writing this post for myself.

I haven’t lost my focus entirely, but I have realized I am not organizing and managing my time wisely as I have found out how many exams, courses, and preparations I need to do before I graduate or if I want to graduate on time.

Pressure can be a motivation, but we all need healthier forms of staying motivated so we don’t burn ourselves out.

So I’m going to give you advice based on what I did during my freshman year of college because I accomplished a lot during that year and managed my time very well.

First off - take care of yourself first.

By this I mean, what you put in your body, exercising, and skincare.

If you do not feel your best, you will not do your best in the other areas of your life.

Get a workout regime going; set a specific time each day when you know you’re going to hit the gym or go out for a run or whatever you do to stay active.

I am telling you, whatever form of exercise you do, if you start your day with it, your productivity will boost 100%

Set and plan out your meals: This one is also a big one.

I know it's so easy to just grab food from outside and go, but usually having these foods early off in our day because of all the additives/sodium/sugars they have, will make us crash during the lunchtime/afternoon.

I always kept breakfast light especially in between classes, I would have a smoothie and a protein bar, and my lunch was usually the biggest meal of my day.

But that all depends on when you have the most time to eat obviously.

Just be mindful of what you’re eating and be aware of what foods make you more antsy, tired, lethargic, etc.

You don’t want to keep eating these even if they taste good because that’s not going to motivate you to stay productive throughout the day.

Most likely you’re going to want to take a nap and or just watch Netflix and it's only like 2 pm.

In the middle of the day if you’re like me, you will hit an energy slump

If you have the luxury I recommend laying down, putting your head down, or taking a QUICK 20 min nap These really are the best to help recharge

But again make sure the nap is no more than 20 mins or you might feel even more tired.

If you can’t do either of these, make sure to stretch around, go for a walk, get fresh air, or get a coffee/ tea.

During evening time that’s when most people are coming back from work, or if you currently work online, when your eyes are closing and your body aches from being at your desk.

I recommend evening time be more on the social side.

Have dinner with your family, siblings, or zoom call a friend and eat together.

Sometimes I go days without really talking to people, and it's not good.

Sometimes you just need a good laugh, or some good Tea to talk about.

If friends or other people are not available, some things you can do is wind down with some skincare, yoga/mediation, and a good book!

Note, how I didn’t include watching Netflix or shows during the day to help with energy,

because I hate to break it to you but watching TV does not give you energy.

During freshman year I didn’t even have Netflix, I barely watched tv.

Only on weekends or Friday evenings would I watch a show.

TV was a waste of time to me otherwise.

However, during the past few months I had found myself watching more shows/movies, and putting off other creative projects that I could be working on.

So now I have been reading more *hard copy* books, instead of reading PDFs online.

If you’re not a book reader, I recommend just trying out a genre that you’re interested in.

Whatever it is sigh, mystery, romance, cooking,

Just pick up a book and read it.

I can list a hundred benefits of reading but honestly the best part

is that you create the images in your head.

It’s not a tv show where you’re just watching everything happen blankly.

Reading challenges our minds, allows us to explore the depths of our creativity and curiosity.

Yes, I’m biased when it comes to reading, but I wouldn’t be vehemently pushing for you to pick up a book if I didn’t know how helpful it would be to help energize and inspire you.

So to sum this whole post up key ideas when it comes to energizing ourselves throughout the day,

  • Get up and workout

  • Drink some good coffee/tea

  • Stretch throughout the day

  • Get a quick nap/rest in if you can

  • EAT nutrient-dense food

  • Smile/laugh with others

  • READ A GOOD BOOK

  • Most importantly feel good about the actions you take and the decisions you make throughout the day

Stay safe, healthy, and blessed <3
